GET ORGANIZED: A Colorful Coffin for DVDs

Here is a quick and cheap (under $25) organizing project that saved us TONS of space.

When the hubs and I moved in together, we had a merging of “the things”. Obviously, “merging” means: my stuff stayed, and I picked through what I liked of his. The rest (of his stuff) went into the attic. Or we set on fire. It was a rough night.

Anyway, the one thing we did merge completely was our DVD collection. Movies upon movies. We have a floor to ceiling bookcase in the dungeon/guest bedroom. It’s not filled with books. It’s filled with DVDs. Did you notice I said in the guest bedroom? That’s right. Our DVDs aren’t even kept in the living room, where we can watch them. Why? Because we don’t watch them. With our subscription to Xbox Live and (thanks, broski) Netflix, plus regular TV, we never watch our DVDs. Like, ever. (< say it like T.Swift).

So, our DVDs just sat in the guest bedroom bookcase, collecting dust. (Seriously, it was gross). I couldn’t even put my books on my bookcase. It’s like an oxymoron. Heavy on the moron. It didn’t make sense, nor was it an effective use of space. I did a little research online and found a media storage case that would fit most of our DVDs:

So, off I went with one of my best friends, Jenna, to the Container Store. FOR THE FIRST TIME. EVER. Kid in a candy store doesn’t even begin to describe the elation I felt. I would compare it to holding your newborn child for the first time, but I don’t have any kids. Container Store wins. (Yes, I realize how ridiculous I sound. You like hookers? I like baskets. Deal with it.) 2 hours later, we finally made our way out. I only got the media box (I know. Self control, level: boss) but I made Jenna loop the store three times with me. It was glorious.

I took all the DVDs out of their cases and put the discs in the media box. Labeled ‘em up, and boom. Done. We threw out the cases, but I saved a few empties for some projects down the road.

I also cut out some scrapbook paper, and slide it down the inside walls of the bin. The original sleeve colors, though pretty, don’t really match anything. In my entire house.

Don’t judge me on our taste (or lack thereof) in movies. Sometimes you just need to buy trash.

so many things in my life are unrated and raw. it should be my tagline. trademark that bitch for me, would ya?

Our DVD sets and Xbox games stayed in their cases (for now) but I moved them from the guest bedroom bookcase to the smaller, 2 shelf bookcase we have in the living room. I didn’t take a straight-on pic, but I do have this great photo of Tony working on his super-secret project. (He likes to mechanical build things. And drink Yuengling. And then build said mechanical things out of Yuengling cans. It’s his way of being green.)

You can see the storage unit, along with the Xbox games and DVD sets. This is so much better for us because now our movies and games are actually within the area we use them. We haven’t actually watched any of the movies in the media box since the move, but we weren’t watching them when they were in the other room, either. However, now they are being stored efficiently and opening up space in the guest bedroom. And now my books have a home.
